Project Outline

Support to to establish a native plant nursery at Ngatapa School. The project supports riparian restoration, erosion control, and hands-on community learning.

Aims

• Establish a native plant nursery at Ngatapa School to support riparian restoration projects.

• Create a practical, educational hub connecting students, whānau and farmers.

• Strengthen erosion control efforts and long-term sustainability of the local catchment.

Project Status - in progress

Key resources have been purchased. A community working bee for set up has been held and project planning with the catchment group has been undertaken. Kauri Forno from Women’s Native Tree Trust was engaged to provide guidance around set up.

A seed collection day was held in collaboration with Wai Connections, the school and community.

The project is now in a position to start seed propagation. The school and catchment group members are feeling confident with seed collection and storage as well as propagation. The site preparation will help with ensuring a fit for purpose hardening off area.

“It has been exciting and inspiring to see the enthusiasm from the Ngatapa School students for the project. A key challenge has been resourcing and capacity of contractors to complete the irrigation to allow us to get underway with the propagation. As a catchment group we are still working through what plants and projects to focus on, how to prioritise these and ensure what is grown is fit for purpose for our community etc.” - Megan Humphreys

Ngātapa korero

We are a community group, based in Ngātapa Gisborne, who are passionate about environmental restoration.

Key goals:

1. Native plantings thrive and survive.

2. Decrease pest numbers throughout the catchment. Reduce out of control pest numbers.

3. Reduce erosion and amount of sediment being lost. Keep our soil on the hills.

4. Create a community / catchment database – collect and record information such as: freshwater quality, biodiversity – flora and fauna, soil data etc.

5. Coordination of projects across properties.
