Manaaki Matakāoa Engagement Grant
Whakangau Kaupapa – Kaitiaki o te Ngahere
The Whakangau Kaupapa engagement was delivered as part of the Manaaki Matakāoa Hunting Competition, a community-driven initiative focused on pest control, forest restoration, and strengthening whānau connection to te taiao. The day began with whakawhanaungatanga, a safety briefing, and structured weigh-in stations for both tamariki and adults
Outcomes
A key highlight of the day was the contribution from DOC kaimahi, who provided practical guidance and shared Mātauranga about pest species, native birds, conservation, and the wider impacts on te taiao. Her engagement supported whānau understanding of how pest removal directly benefits native bush and waterways. Whānau appreciated this Kaupapa and expressed interest in more future pest-control initiatives, reinforcing the Kaupapa alignment with long-term restoration goals.
The engagement successfully strengthened community connection, built capability, and supported early-stage planning for a wider continuation of intergenerational taiao Kaupapa. Whānau benefited through hands-on learning, pest-removal activity, and opportunities to contribute to environmental restoration following the January flooding.
Reflections
Whānau expressed deep gratitude for being able to contribute to the restoration of the ngahere, especially after the January flooding caused extensive damage across the rohe. Tamariki and rangatahi enjoyed being outdoors; for some, they learnt new skills, and all helped to protect native species and farming areas.
A major highlight was the sheer volume of pests brought in throughout the day, demonstrating strong community commitment to pest control and taiao restoration. Despite the rain, whānau still turned up in large numbers, showing resilience and enthusiasm for the kaupapa.
Tamariki enjoyed learning outdoor skills, contributing to pest control, and taking part in meaningful kaupapa. Adults valued the opportunity to mentor rangatahi and shared Mātauranga about hunting, safety, and caring for the environment.
Next steps arising from this event: Building on the success of this kaupapa, Manaaki Matakāoa is now planning a December Whakangau Kaupapa to further support pest control and environmental restoration.
